1. Who we are
Parched is an iOS application developed and published by Jason Nichols, trading as an independent developer based in the United Kingdom. For the purposes of UK GDPR (and applicable data protection law in other jurisdictions), Jason Nichols is the data controller.
You can contact us at hello@parched.app with any privacy-related queries.
2. What data we collect and why
Parched collects the minimum data required to provide the watering verdict service. The table below sets out exactly what we collect and why.
| Data | Why we use it | Lawful basis | Stored where |
|---|---|---|---|
| Approximate location (latitude and longitude) | To identify the nearest weather station or rain gauge for accurate local data | Consent (you grant location permission via the iOS prompt) | On your device only |
| Plot details (name, location, crops, notification preferences) | To calculate your daily watering verdict and deliver the correct notification | Performance of a contract (providing the service you have requested) | On your device only (CoreData) |
| Subscription status (whether you hold an active Parched Pro subscription) | To determine which features are available to you | Performance of a contract | On your device only; verified via Apple's StoreKit |
| Notification permission | To send your daily watering verdict at the time you choose | Consent (you grant notification permission via the iOS prompt) | On your device only |
We do not collect your name, email address, age, contacts, photos, health data, browsing history, or any device identifiers. We have no user accounts. We do not use analytics software, crash reporting tools, or advertising SDKs of any kind.
3. Weather data sources
To calculate your watering verdict, Parched fetches weather data from the following third-party services. Your device connects to these services directly - we have no server in the middle that receives or stores this data.
- Open-Meteo (open-meteo.com) - open-source historical weather API. No account or API key required. Open-Meteo processes requests under their own terms. No personal data is sent in the request - only a latitude and longitude.
- Environment Agency (EA) - UK rain gauge data via the public Flood Monitoring API. No personal data is sent - only a bounding box of coordinates to find nearby gauges.
- NOAA Climate Data Online (optional, US-operated) - used as a rainfall source for plots in the United States and as a supplementary source for other locations. Only a station ID and date range are sent - no personal data.
4. Apple and in-app purchases
If you subscribe to Parched Pro, your payment is processed entirely by Apple through the App Store. We never receive your payment card details, billing address, or Apple ID. Apple's Privacy Policy governs Apple's handling of that transaction.
To verify your subscription is active, Parched calls Apple's StoreKit framework on your device. No subscription data leaves your device to our servers - because we have no servers.
5. Data retention
All data is stored locally on your device by iOS's CoreData framework. It is retained for as long as you have the app installed. When you delete the app, iOS removes all associated data automatically. We have no ability to retain or recover your data after uninstallation.
6. Data sharing
We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with any third parties for commercial purposes. The only external connections the app makes are the weather API requests described in section 3 above, which contain no personal data beyond a geographic coordinate.
7. Children's privacy
Parched is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information through the app, please contact us at hello@parched.app.
8. Your rights under UK GDPR
Depending on where you live, you may have the following rights regarding your personal data:
- Right of access - you can request a copy of the data we hold about you.
- Right to rectification - you can correct inaccurate data (in practice, your data is stored on your device and can be edited directly in the app's settings).
- Right to erasure - you can delete all your data by deleting the app from your device.
- Right to withdraw consent - you can revoke location or notification permissions at any time via iOS Settings.
- Right to lodge a complaint - UK residents can contact the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk. US residents may have rights under applicable state privacy laws.
Given that all data is stored on your device and not on our servers, most of these rights are exercised directly through the app or iOS settings rather than by contacting us.
9. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any material changes will be reflected in the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this page periodically. Continued use of the app after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
10. Contact
For any privacy-related questions or requests, please contact us at hello@parched.app. We aim to respond within 10 working days.
